April Eisman

April A. Eisman (MA Courtauld Institute of Art, PhD University of Pittsburgh) is Associate Professor of Art History at Iowa State University. A specialist in East German art and its reception, she has published numerous articles on the topic, including “East German Art and the Permeability of the Berlin Wall” (German Studies Review, 5/2015) and “Painting the East German Experience: Neo Rauch in the Late 1990s” (Oxford Art Journal, 2/2012). Her first book manuscript, “A Field of Friction: Bernhard Heisig and the Fight for Modern Art in East Germany,” will be published by Camden House in 2018. She has received an NEH fellowship to for 2018-19 to complete her second book manuscript, “Angela Hampel: A Contemporary Artist in East Germany.” Co-founder of the Transatlantic Institute for East German Art (TIEGA), Eisman is currently organizing its second conference, together with the Kunstfonds Dresden, which will take place in Dresden in May 2017.
