5 Questions with Sara Blaylock

In this 5 Questions interview, art historian Sara Blaylock discusses experimental practices in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) during the 1980s within a global context. She considers the ways in which the national culture of state socialism informed experimental practices and vice versa. Particular emphasis is given to performance and feminism, two areas that Blaylock feels need further attention in writing of histories of art produced in the GDR. Blaylock’s scholarship is motivated by the idea that “art and visual culture [are] not only a lens but a driver of social and political change.”
