Mladen Stilinović in Conversation with Ana Janevski

In this video Ana Janevski, Associate Curator in the Department of Media and Performance Art, interviews the Croatian artist Mladen Stilinović in his apartment in Zagreb in March 2013 during the C-MAP Central and Eastern European group trip to Novi Sad, Belgrade, Ljubljana and Zagreb. Given the artist's recent passing in July 2016, these excerpts feel especially timely for the light they shed on the beginnings of his career and some of his most well know works, including Exploitation of the Dead, which is part of the MoMA Collection.

In 1975, Mladen Stilinovć became a member of the Group of Six Artists, a group of avant-garde artists in Zagreb, then Yugoslavia, who organized exhibitions-actions in public space, seeking for more autonomous art venues for art production and distribution. Since then, he never stopped questioning conventional art forms and the definition of art in his books, collages, photographs, films, installations and objects. His well-known artist's books, many of them in the collection of the MoMA Library, began as open editions. That is, as soon as he would give away one, he would produce a new one.

From a formal perspective, Stilinović proposes an examination of the aesthetic and social heritage of the historical avant-gardes, overcoming the intellectual strictness of conceptual art, and opening a space for humor and irony. Stilinović’s works are typically simple in their execution but meticulously engaged with complex subjects, such as poverty, death, money, economy, and pain, while systematically researching the relations between language and ideology. “The question is how to manipulate that which manipulates you,” explains Stilinović.

His installation Exploitation of Dead (1984-1990), part of MoMA Collection, was recently on view in the exhibition Scenes for a New Heritage: Contemporary Art from the Collection.

Stilinović artist's books were featured in the 2012 MoMA Library exhibition Scenes from Zagreb: Artists Publications of the New Art Practice.
